• Lending Circles for Citizenship

Without legal citizenship, hard-working aspiring Americans lack voting rights, promising employment opportunities, and access to financing for higher education. Low-wage earners often live from paycheck to paycheck, leaving the $725 citizenship application fee standing in their way of a secure future. MAF’s Lending Circles program organizes aspiring citizens to lend and borrow with each other to finance naturalization fees and build a brighter future.

How It Works

Lending Circles for Citizenship provides a zero-interest loan to help participants finance the $725 application fee needed to apply for U.S. citizenship. Participants take our online financial training class and build credit by making low monthly payments for 10 months. As soon as participants are ready to apply for citizenship, we give them a check made out to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Gaining citizenship opens doors and brightens futures. According to a 2007 study, immigrant families who become citizens are less likely to be low-income. Over half of all immigrants eligible for citizenship are low-income, but only 38% are low-income after becoming citizens.
U.S. citizenship is a powerful financial asset that helps hardworking people earn more money, get better jobs, and increase financial stability for themselves and their families.
